I have a 1984 S12 silvia rsx(fj20et) ,The car is used on weekends mainly, but I would like to enter drift comps and club autocross/hillclimbs as well.
Main problem is there is no after market support for suspension.
Iam not sure if I should go for just lowered springs and shocks or a fully adjustable setup.
The only people I have found who have lowered springs for the rear(IRS separate shock/spring like z31 300zx) is Kmac ,who will make them to order (but Ive been told lowered springs can "fall out"by kings who wont touch it)
Avo in england do a lowered spring set but I cant find a aussie distributor(yet).
I have pics of a adjustable spring seat welded to the bottom arms(but again its an unknown and i dont want to wreck it as parts are hard enough to get as it is).
No aussie catalogs list decent shocks and koni says NLA.
I have nizmo part numbers(which are koni!).
American Kyb catalogs List 343210 or kg4754a (200sx 85-88)
What would be best for my application
I am a 5 hour drive north of brissy(middle of nowhere)
Any help would be greatly appreciated

G'day Pete,

It certainly seems that you have a problem with the rear spring set up.

We can currently supply a number of the bushes and shocks for this chassis but other than that, there is not a lot available.

We would need to determine how many owners are genuinely interested in a suspension package for the S12 before we could offer a commitment to develop a solution.

Pete, if you are aware of other S12 Gazelle/200SX owners, both here and overseas, who may be interested in a swaybar, spring and shock, bush and alignment kit for these cars, could you let me know please.

Regards

Peter

Hi

I too have an S12 Gazelle with IRS. I am currently re-installing a rebuilt (and improved) FJ20ET. I'd like to upgrade the handling, and lower the car a couple of inches. I have the same problem that Pete has in sourcing upgraded components.

I know from various websites that a number of owners are struggling with the same problem and, as Pete says, some are resorting to trying to fix the problem themselves...

I'd definitely be interested in a kit if it became available.

BTW, I have the adjustable Nismo shocks fitted to the rear of my car. I'm not sure Koni ever did ones for the front??

Cheers, Danny

G'day Everyone :)

First up I would just like to say "Thank You" :) to all of you for responding. Considering we only asked if there was any interest out there 24 hours ago - things are looking promising.

Pete, you may have started something here - thats for sure.

The chassis we are discussing here is the Nissan S12 with IRS (independent rear suspension) that was released between 04/84--09/88. I believe an earlier rigid rear axle version was released in early 84 and this chassis will be excluded from our discussion.

I understand the vehicle was released in a number of variants with different engines including the 87-88 VG20E V6 released in North America as a 200SX SE V6.

In Australia it was referred to a Gazelle, while the JDM version was a Silvia. In Europe it was referred to as a 180ZX.

I understand that variations in rear body shape such as coupe and hatch had no difference in rear suspension components.

I think i have offered enough to generate some comment and I'm sure I'll be corrected where necessary .

peter

you are in nsw (aus) right? i know of at least 2 nsw S12's with IRS who have NOT replied on this list. the cars are also being modified and are quite keen on the idea of properly sorted suspension.

would it be easier for me to get these people round your way so you can actually see the product?

cheers

This is awsome ,though I did expect this much interest would be generated.
As far as I know all irs s12 chassis share the same components except the fj20 powered ones have a r200 diff and larger drive shafts.Im pretty sure a lot of components are interchangeable with the z31 300zx.

G'day to all the S12 Owners,

I will be replying separately in the next couple of days to those who have contacted us off list by email and if we miss any one please accept my apology - hopefully we can catch you here.

We plan on having access to a vehicle in approximately two weeks time when it will be our intention to carry out a preliminary assessment of the S12 chassis to determine what we can come up with in the short term and what else might be feasible as a follow on. Lets refer to this as Stage One and Stage Two.

For rough planing purposes, we would like to be in a position to report back to you on our initial findings from Stage One by the end of the month.

For those of you who are interested in "Drift", I have posted some info on the up and coming Austrlaian HPI Drift Nationals in the "Drift section above.

I have an Aussie delivered S12 that is becoming a development mule if you're interested Peter. I'm fairly close to one of the Qld Whiteline dealers - Fulcrum Suspension (Stafford). If you are interested in a rolling chassis (ie missing engine - being rebuilt) you're welcome to borrow the car. I have a spare late model IRS I'd like to adapt to the car to replace the live axle setup. Any help there would be apreciated.

I will hopefully also be getting my hands on an RS-X with IRS soon so I can get a good look at the live vs IRS setup.

Hi just wondering if theres any progress with the kit and what would it include?
I know of a few guys doing or have done the IRS swap(gerrybg and nerbuchermiser)from www.club-s12.org
http://www.club-s12.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=5&sid=183490022eea132bfdb291bc69e018b6
above is a link to the suspension section of club s12 though everyone one that has replied has probably come from there anyway
I also heard that the fj20 front swaybar is different from the ca20 one
hope this helps with the development

Gday, i have the SR20DET powered gazelle that was mentioned above there with the IRS conversion. Nothing really for me to add here apart from that i want rear springs for my car haha. King tell me one minute they will and another minute they won't...wierd, anyways it's not helping me much even though i know the exact specs i want.

Sorry to bring this up from the depths, but has there been any progress on an IRS solution?

I'm now considering an S13 rear subframe & components in to the S12 (better geometry & avalability of parts, especially LSD diffs). Has anyone looked into this?

G'day,

We ran into a ?bit? of a problem accessing a vehicle to design swaybars etc. The owner of the vehicle has had his share of "Murphy Problems" and the vehicle in question may now be available in the near future.

Can anyone confirm if the CA18 and FJ20 models require a different front swaybar please. A photo of the swaybars on the cars showing the dip around the engine sump might help.

Hopefully we may have some news in a week or two :)

Cheers

I could provide a photo of the CA20 front swaybay soon if you like. I curently don't have the motor or radiator in so it will be easy to get shots.
