Getting ready to install a set of G4's (circuit spec.) on an 04 STI. Out of the box the hardware look and feels first class. These struts are going on with new STI top mounts that are the same size and shape as the existing mounts. When putting all of these parts together prior to installation some questions arose. Rather than install the pieces and realize I did it wrong I thought I would ask first :-)
1) The slotted white plastic piece that sits loose on the shaft (which is called an"air disc" I believe from the 05 STI thread) - where does it get placed? As I understood from the other thread it has something to do with preventing the trapping of air in the bump stops. If so - where do you place the disc in relation to the bump stop.
2) On the front struts there is a upper spring perch (aluminum that is gold anodized) provided that fits on the same shoulder as the bearing in the top mount. If I install the new aluminum perch then the bearing in the top mount is only partially engaged (about 1/2 the bearing thickness). Is this correct? There is a spring perch already on the top mount.
3) The strut covers that are provided appear to rest inside the tender spring/coil spring perch as a loose fit - is this correct?
4) There are a pair of bump stops on each strut in the back (one inside and one outside the strut cover). On the front struts there is only a single bump stop inside the cover. Is this the correct configuration?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

1. Air bleed disc is placed between bump stop and shock absorber body.
2. That is fine. Please note, that OEM tapared washer between top mount and top spring seat is not to be reused.
3. The dust covers will rest on the bump stops which will settle at the top of the shaft.
4. Yes, that is correct. We use tweo bump stops on the rear shocks as there is more travel. We fit the dust cover in the rear between the two bump stops for better location and fitment.

Regards,
Wojtek.

Wojtek,
Thanks for the quick response. After reading your description of where the "air disc" is located it dawned on me that it's purpose it to prevent the bump stop from sticking to the shock body. I had been trying to visualize it working at the opposite end of the stroke!
I hate putting stuff together and not understanding what the various pieces are supposed to do :-)
