I just got my front sway bar yesterday (BSF10) for my 2002 Impreza 2.5RS (non-turbo), and installed it last night. In order to get the other one out, I had to:
1. Remove wheel
2. Remove the jack plate
3. Remove the subframe
4. Remove the exhaust manifolds (actually, they dropped enough with the nuts removed so I could get the bar out).
Did I have to do all of that? I haven't seen directions for the 2002 2.5RS, as almost everyone (at least here in the US) has a WRX or 2001 and older RS in the forums. Most WRX owners talk about removing the subframe at the most and that the process takes about an hour tops. This took me about 4 hours of screwing around, but could probably do it in 2 now that I know what needs to be done.
Also, I did get a clunking sound for the first 10 or so turns, then it quieted down greatly and stopped altogether. I am assuming that the linkage got settled in afterward, and will check everything again tonight.
