Hey guys,

I own a 2004 VW Golf 2.0 Sport, i'm currently looking at lowering the car (not too much) and reducing some body roll and bounce the car currently has. I'm on a really tight budget, so i was thinking of just buying some whiteline control springs and putting those on front and rear.

Question: will this be effective enough to reducing the roll and bounce slightly, and will this lower the car by much? - i don't need the car for track, and i use the car about 4 - 6 hours a day so practicality and comfort are a main need as well. i just can't stand the about of bounce and roll currently in the stock setup.

Thanks in advance,

Yani

Although just lowering the Mk4 Golf with springs will reduce roll somewhat, the main problem is the standard dampers. The standard damper (not the VAG sport suspension) seems to lose most of it's low speed damping after about 20000 KM. Result is increased roll, diagonal pitching in corners, roll understeer/oversteer and general 'crashy' suspension.

If you just fit springs, I think you will not be happy. If at all possible, splash out on a set of good dampers as well as the control springs. This will dramatically improve the car. If, after this, the Golf still displays to much of it's inherent understeer for you, add a thicker rear anti roll bar.

G'day,

A basic point to consider when replacing springs is that lowered springs by their very nature, will (usually) be much stiffer to compensate for the reduced suspension travel before contacting the bump stops. Next, springs control bumps and shocks control springs. We therefore would suggest that you replace your shocks when replacing the springs.

The above supports the comments offered by jgevers - thanks for your contribution jgevers. Your comments make a lot a lot of sense :)

We have two rear swaybars for the Golf which will match the rate of the Control springs. These are:

BWR15 22mm fixed rate swaybar kit, and
BWR15Z Blade adjustable bar,

In summary, the springs and shocks and a rea bar will result in a well behaved Golf.

Thanks guys,
both replys make alot of sense. It's just a matter of scraping the $ together to afford the shocks and the springs, and if i can the sway bar...

thanks once again,
