Hi all!

I am currently researching what options I have in upgrading the suspension on my 2002 mx5. It is a daily driver which does the occasional track day.

This is the first time I am upgrading the suspension and I want to get it right the 1st time round (I know this may be wishful thinking).

My aims are
- improved handling
- controlled and comfortable ride
- lowering of the car by speficific measurements for looks and function ie front -10mm, rear -25 to 30mm

I've found a set of springs from a jap tuner which will lower the car to my specifiations. However I am having trouble deciding on a shock to match it.

It is a dual rate spring (appearance wise it looks like a progressively coiled spring) and its rates are:

Front: Main 5.0 Primary 4.7
Rear: Main 3.8 Primary 3.5

I assume these rates are in kg/mm

Are these springs too firm for a street car?
If not, what shocks would be recommended to match these? ie what brands, adjustable/non-adjustable, custom....
Otherwise should I just spend more money and get height adjustable coliovers?

Thanks

Hi,

The spring rates you metioned below, which are around twice the standard rates, are in my opinion too high for a street car. As you are after a very precise ride height and handling and ride balance, I suggest that you look for a coil-over kit (so you can adjust the ride height exactly as you want) that will suit your driving conditions. This will also give you the flaxibility to change spring rates if you need/want to.
