I have a new 2007 WRX (European spec). Generally I'm happy, but would like to make a handling improvement without impacting the ride to any significant degree. (or much cost)

I would like to reduce roll - particularly the initial roll into a corner and the "transitional roll" when going from one lock to another. I'd also like a bit less understeer.

From what I have read, my inclination is to put a slightly stiffer rear anti toll bar (sway bar) and associated drop links.

Am I on the right lines? What is the range of stiffness of the 22mm adjustable bar relative to the standard bar? My concern is the ride in the rear, which is already marginal for my taste (in the front it is fine).

Hi,

For improved body roll and corner speed, you are correct our first recommendation is upgrading the rear Swaybar. For your application we recommend part number -

BSR36Z - 22mm Adj Swaybar. This Swaybar has 3 holes which will offer a 22mm setting with the option of a stiffer and softer setting. You need to confirm your OE Swaybar size before we can comment on stiffness comparison but I would be incined to say you have a 20mm OE swaybar, if so our Swaybar will offer a stiffness increase of approx 20-70% depending on link position.

If you have any further enquiries please don't hesitate to contact me directly.

Thanks for your reply. I might have mislead you by mentioning the 22mm bar - I hadn't measured mine first (foolish I know)
I've just measured the rear bar - it's actually 17mm (is that normal in Europe?)(the front is 20mm). Correct me if I'm wrong but that would be 180% increase in stiffness. Wouldn't such a big change be too much, both in terms of handling balance and ride?

Hi,

As a general rule, for balanced handling the WRX chassis responds best with similar size front and rear Swaybars. Car manufactorers like to tune their vehicles with a degree of understeer for safety reasons. This explains the 17mm rear Swaybar. Part number - BSR36Z is your best option, setting the Swaybar on the softer option first until you become acustomed to the vehicles changed behavior.
